Statement

It’s frightening but true: we’re currently experiencing the worst spate of species die-offs since the loss of the dinosaurs. Unlike past mass extinctions, the current crisis is almost entirely caused by us — humans. This makes me wonder: Will the same thing happen to the animals around us? Will these beautiful animals one day fade into skeletons and lie deadly in museums too? The series of paintings focused on the relationship between the modern-day animals and their extinct ancestors to call on the protection of environment and wild animals.

For each piece, there are diagonal lines breaking up the space, separating the tedium fossils with the colorful parts of the wild animals. For the skeletal part of the ancient animals, I first use ink and pen to portray the outline of the skeletons, and later the details of the rough texture of bones. Then I use markers to bring out layers of shadows. While the skeletal parts contain different values of black, white and grey, the rest of the composition is more colorful, especially for the contemporary animals. You can see that in some pieces, I use vibrant colors to further bring out the contrast.

The medium for each piece are watercolour, markers and ink. Each piece are 20.9 inches by length and 15 inches by width.
